Course Summary

How do you fancy a career in an industry that is growing year upon year, with over 450,000 job opportunities nationwide? This vocational course provides you with an excellent and broad understanding of the key topic areas within sports science, which will enable you to be successful whether you intend apply for higher education, further education, apprenticeships or full time employment.

The course covers everything from anatomy and physiology, sports injury management and healthy lifestyles, to training programming, sports leadership, and gaining employment in the sports industry. All of these units aim to provide you with the skills and knowledge you will need to succeed.

As mentioned, this course can lead to further education courses at university, in programmes such as Sport and Exercise Science, Sports Coaching, Physical Education, and Sports Studies. Furthermore, this course can be seen as the perfect stepping stone to employment and/or apprenticeships in careers such as sports coaching, PE teaching, sports nutrition, sports psychology, physiotherapy, sports development, personal training, and sports management.

Course Details

You will need to study the following mandatory units across the two years:

  • Anatomy and Physiology

§ Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being

§ Professional Development in the Sports Industry

§ Sports Leadership

§ Application of Fitness Testing

§ Sports Injury Management

§ Investigating Business in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry

§ Skill Acquisition in Sport

§ Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will be assessed through an external examination in Unit 1 (Anatomy and Physiology), a controlled assessment task in Unit 2 (Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being) and through a series of internally assessed coursework assignment.

In the Diploma course, you will have three further internally assessed units and one externally assessed unit - Unit 22 (Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry).

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics

4 grade in GCSE Physical Education or Merit in BTEC First 'Award' in Sport.
