Course Summary

This is a career-focused qualification with industry endorsement. Students develop an underpinning knowledge and understanding of the sports industry and careers within it. Students will develop their technical and practical skills in planning and delivering various sports activities as well as gain experience as an assistant coach.

Course Details

This course covers a variety of theoretical and practical units including anatomy, physiology, injuries in sport, business in sport, developing coaching skills, and practical performance. Students study social and economic factors that impact sports development and participation. They will develop an understanding of the sports and leisure industry and the careers within it, including roles in sports science, coaching, and media. There will be work-related learning activities throughout the course such as planning and leading PE lessons for local primary schools which will develop communication, organisation, teamwork, and leadership skills. Students will also be required to complete a work placement within a local sport or active leisure organisation.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

This course is internally assessed through assignment work. Students will also be expected to lead practical coaching sessions regularly to peers and external sports groups.

Entry requirements

At least four GCSEs graded 9-4, including English or Maths.

Equipment required

Additional activities include first aid, coaching badges and trips, which may incur a fee. There is a compulsory sports kit that students will be expected to purchase and wear in all practical lessons. Students will need to ensure they have Astro boots and a whistle as well.

This course would be suitable for students who have a keen interest in sports coaching, who wish to study sport at higher education or enter employment in the sporting industry. Previous students have progressed onto studying various sport-related degrees in Sport Science, Sports Development and PE Teaching, as well as using their qualifications to gain employment.
