Encounters with employers and employees: Every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment opportunities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes, and could include pupils’ own part-time employment where it exists.
Through multiple encounters with different industries, pupils should have the opportunity to learn from employers about work and the skills that are valued. The aim is to help pupils understand the realities of the workplace, different career paths and the expectations of employers. To reflect this, the Meaningful Definitions have been updated:
Meaningful checklist:
❑ have a clear purpose, shared with employer and young person
❑ underpinned by learning outcomes appropriate to the young person
❑ opportunities for two-way interactions between the young person and the employer
❑ time for the young person to reflect on insights, knowledge or skills gained.
Things to be mindful of:
• include a variety of employers
• use virtual formats where appropriate
• prepare students and employers
• provide tailored support for SEND and disadvantaged learners.
This How to Guide will help you understand how to embed progressive employer encounters and work experiences that will support you meeting the new Statutory Guidance and Gatsby Benchmarks.
