Course Summary

WHY THIS COURSE:

A-Level English Language and Literature is perfect for students who enjoy exploring how language shapes the way we think, communicate and tell stories. You will study a fascinating range of literary and non-literary texts, from novels, poetry and drama to speeches, articles and real-world conversations, developing your skills as both an analytical reader and a confident writer. The course encourages creativity, independent thinking and lively discussion, while building valuable communication and critical thinking skills that are highly regarded by universities and employers.

STUDENT PROFILE:

Students should have a confident grasp of the English language and a wide-ranging interest in literature. They should be interested in why and how specific words and phrases are used, and the technicalities behind our language.

They should read widely and enjoy forming their own opinions.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The variety of assessment styles used, such as passage-based questions, unseen material, single-text questions, multiple-text questions, open and closed-book approaches, allow students to develop a wide range of skills. These include the ability to read critically, analyse, evaluate and undertake independent research, all of which are valuable for both further study and future employment.

Overall, there are two exam papers and one coursework piece to be completed in the second year of study.
