Course Summary

WHY THIS COURSE:

Film Studies is a challenging but exciting course that allows students to explore film as both an art form and a cultural product. Students will study a range of films from different countries, cultures and time periods, exploring how filmmakers use cinematography, editing, sound, mise-en-scène and narrative to create meaning.

The course encourages students to look beyond simply watching films and instead ask questions about how and why films affect audiences. Students will develop their own interpretations, explore different critical perspectives and consider how films reflect the societies and cultures in which they are produced.

The course also provides opportunities to develop practical filmmaking skills, allowing students to apply their understanding of film language creatively.

STUDENT PROFILE:

Students should have a genuine interest in film and enjoy discussing and analysing films. They should be confident readers and writers who are willing to develop detailed, analytical responses.

Students should be prepared to watch films closely, revisit sequences, learn specialist film terminology and develop their own interpretations. They should also be organised and willing to work independently, as success depends on regular revision, detailed knowledge of set films and consistent development of analytical and practical work.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment combines written examinations with practical filmmaking and an evaluative component. Students will develop a wide range of skills including close analysis of film sequences, understanding film form, applying critical approaches, exploring context and comparing different films.

Students will complete extended examination responses requiring them to use precise evidence, film terminology and critical interpretations. They will also develop practical filmmaking skills and produce creative work that demonstrates their understanding of film form and storytelling.
