Course Summary

Further Mathematics is essential for students wishing to study Mathematics at degree level and is highly valued for Science and Engineering degrees. Students must also be enrolled in A Level Mathematics to follow this course.

Course Details

Course content:

In the 2 year course students will prepare for four externally examined papers. The following overarching themes should be applied across the whole of the detailed content in the specification:

1. Mathematical argument, language and proof

2. Mathematical problem solving

3. Mathematical modelling.

Mandatory Papers:

Pure Core 1 & Pure Core 2: Proof, complex numbers, matrices, further vectors, further algebra, series, hyperbolic functions, further calculus, polar coordinates, differential equations.

Optional Papers:

Further Mathematics Option 1:

Students take one of the following four options: A: Further Pure Mathematics 1 B: Further Statistics 1 C: Further Mechanics 1 D: Decision Mathematics 1

Further Mathematics Option 2:

Students take one of the following seven options: A: Further Pure Mathematics 2 B: Further Statistics 1 C: Further Mechanics 1 D: Decision Mathematics 1 E: Further Statistics 2

At BCGS we generally choose Further Mechanics 1 and Further Statistics 1

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Core Pure Mathematics 1 and Core Pure Mathematics 2

Each paper is: 1 hour and 30 minutes written examination, 25% of the qualification, 75 marks.

Further Mathematics Option 1:

1 hour and 30 minutes written examination, 25% of the qualification, 75 marks

Further Mathematics Option 2:

1 hour and 30 minutes written examination, 25% of the qualification, 75 marks

Entry requirements

Sixth Form entry requirements, including GCSE Mathematics at grade 8.
