Course Summary

Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of fine art media, processes and techniques. They will be made aware of both traditional and new media. Students will explore the use of drawing for different purposes, using a variety of methods and media on a variety of scales, using sketchbooks/workbooks/journals to underpin their work where appropriate.

Students should explore relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to a range of art, craft and design, from the past and from recent times, including European and non-European examples. This should be integral to the investigating and making processes. Students' responses to these examples must be shown through practical and critical activities that demonstrate their understanding of different styles, genres and traditions.

Course Details

  • The course includes a wide variety of Fine Art techniques ranging from acrylic paint to zoetropes.
  • You will learn how to develop ideas, reference the work of other artists and use materials such as acrylic, collage, ICT and oil paint.
  • Students' work is supported by trips run by the Art and Photography Department. It is of benefit to students to visit galleries independently.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Students will complete work in two components, Component 1 is a Non-Examination Assessment Personal Investigation with written elements worth 60% and Component 2 is an Externally Set Assignment that concludes with a 15 hour period of sustained focus worth 40% of the final grade.

Entry requirements

In order to attend Meopham Sixth Form the minimum entry requirement is 5 level 4 GCSEs, including English Language and Mathematics.

To study Fine Art you are required to achieve the minimum of a level 4 in GCSE Art or equivalent courses.

Your next steps...

Fine Art A Level could lead to a foundation course and degree in the subject, and then support entry into careers as varied as graphic design, architecture, teaching, museum curating, restoration work and working in the computer games industry. Students who have completed the course have successfully applied and completed Fine Art degrees.
