Course Summary
A Level Biology is one of the Russell Group universities’ ‘facilitating’ subjects — so called because choosing them at A-level allows a wide range of options for degree study. This A Level is a combination of theory and practical and will give you an insight into the contemporary world of Biology. You will also become aware of how scientists work, communicate with each other and make decisions, as well as the importance of science for today’s society.
Course Details
During this course, you will learn about:
Biological molecules including DNA; cell membrane structure; the immune system; mass transportation in the human body; genetic diversity; taxonomy; photosynthesis and respiration; homeostasis; natural selection and about gene technologies.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
100% examination. Three 2-hour exams at the end of the two-year course:
● Paper 1: 35% of total A Level
Short and long answer questions; 15 marks for extended response questions. Includes practical skills related questions.
● Paper 2: 35% of total A Level
Short and long answer questions plus 15 marks for a comprehension question.
● Paper 3: 30% of total A Level
38 marks structured questions and practical techniques; 15 marks critical analysis of given experimental data. 25 marks one essay from a choice of two titles.

The A Level Biology course provides an in-depth study of the foundations of Biology and is an excellent base for a university degree in healthcare, biological sciences and sports science. Biology A Level also complements Psychology and Sociology.
Previous students have gone on to study a range of courses at university, including BSc (Biochemistry) with a sandwich year in industry, BA (Hons) Criminology, BSc (Hons) Forensic Science and BSc (Hons) Equine and Veterinary Bioscience. One of our Biology alumni now works as a scientific researcher for a pharmaceutical company in Boston, USA.
