Course Summary
BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport combines with Science, including Psychology, to enable progression onto a Sports Science Degree Course at University, and provides a sound base for those wishing to practice physiotherapy. When combined with Sociology or Geography it offers a good base for a degree in Social or Environmental Sciences. Combining Sports Science with Business Studies offers a pathway into Sports Management and Business, including the world of the Sports Agent and Coaching.
Course Details
Mandatory Units
Unit 1 Anatomy and physiology: Learners explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems
Unit 2 Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being: Learners explore client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client’s health and well-being.
Unit 3 Professional Development in the Sports Industry: Learners explore the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities.
Optional Unit
Unit 5 Application of Fitness Testing: Learners gain an understanding of the requirements of fitness testing and learn how to safely conduct a range of fitness tests for different components of fitness.

How will it be delivered and assessed?
Unit 1: Written 1.5hr examination (worth up to 32 points)
Unit 2: Written synoptic 2.5hr assessment, set and marked by Pearson (worth up to 32 points)
Unit 3: Internal assessment (worth up to 16 points)
Unit 5: Internal assessment (worth up to 16 points)
The overall BTEC grade will be based on total points along with minimum requirements in each unit. The BTEC is awarded at Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.
Entry requirements
Sixth Form entry requirements including GCSE PE grade 5 or BTEC Sport Level 2 Merit and a GCSE science grade 5.
