The purpose of the VTCT Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering qualification is to provide you with the knowledge, skills and understanding to be a hairdressing or barbering assistant. This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years or over and has both mandatory and optional units for you to achieve. The mandatory units are shampooing and conditioning hair, preparing for hair services and maintaining the work area, contributing to effective working relationships and blow drying hair. The optional section of this qualification allows you to gain skills in, plait and twist hair using basic techniques. Assist with hair colouring and lightening services, You will learn through theory and practical sessions and you will undertake practical exams. Working on external clientele to complete your practical assessments.

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade 2/F or above, including English or maths.

The main purpose of this qualification is to enable you to gain employment as an assistant/apprentice hairdresser or barber in a commercial salon/barber shop.
