Course Summary
This course combines the study of English Language and English Literature, exploring how writers and speakers use language to create meanings, represent people and places, tell stories and express ideas. Students will:
• analyse literary and non-literary texts using linguistic and literary methods
• explore how context, audience, purpose and point of view shape meaning
• develop confident, critical interpretations and make connections between texts
• experiment with creative writing and evaluate their own language choices
• undertake independent research into a topic of personal interest
Course Details
Students will study these units of work:
Paper 1: Telling Stories (40%) – Students explore Remembered Places through the AQA Anthology: Paris; Imagined Worlds through a prose text; and Poetic Voices through a poetry selection
Paper 2: Exploring Conflict (40%) – Students study Writing about Society, producing re-creative writing based on a set text and a critical commentary, alongside Dramatic Encounters, analysing conflict in a play.
Non-examination Assessment: Making Connections (20%) – Students complete an independent investigation of 2,500–3,000 words, exploring a chosen theme or technique across literary and non-literary material.
