If you study A Level English Literature, you will experience a wide range of dramatic and thought-provoking texts. You will be able to experience for yourself the power of language to convey thoughts and feelings.

The study of Literature will help you to develop a variety of usefull skills: verbal, written, critical and analytical skills are all important aspects of this course. This makes A Level English Literature invaluable to anyone who is considering a career in which communication is important.

Many of our past students have gone on to study Literature and other arts courses at University. Many have entered careers where critical analysis and strong interpersonal communication skills are vital.

AS English Literature

How will it be delivered and assessed?

AS Level Course

Exams
Paper 1: 50% 1.5 Hours: Closed book Literary Genres: Aspects of Tragedy 2 Texts

Students will be required to take an active part in class discussions as well as leading lessons on occasion. Further critical reading around the subject is also required.

A2 Level Course Exams

Paper 1: 40% 2.5 Hours: Closed book Literary Genres: Aspects of Tragedy 3 Texts

Paper 2: 40% 3 Hours: Clean open book Literary Genres: Elements of Crime or Political and Social Protest Writing 3 Texts

Non-examined Assessment: 20%: 2 tasks: 1500 words each AQA Critical Anthology and independent reading

Students will be required to take an active part in class discussions as well as leading lessons on occasion. Further critical reading around the subject is also required.

Entry requirements

Students should have gained a grade 6 or higher in both GCSE English and English Literature.
