What is it?
Film Studies in the in depth and detailed analysis of American, British and World Cinema. As an essay based subject a lot of the work we do with students will involve improving written skills as well as their knowledge of cinematography and the film industry.

Why do it?
If you are fascinated by film and you are keen to discuss the meanings film makers can create with audio visual stimuli, then this subject is for you!

What skills do you need?
Film studies will require a high level of written ability, as well as the ab i lity to analyse and interpret meanings and responses. You will also need an ability to work independently on practical tasks such as filming and editing. The film studies course will prepare you with essential skills such as research and communication abilities.
The current specification is weighted as 70% written exam and 30% production coursework.

Is it difficult?
A Level Film Studies is difficult, but Brockhill have an excellent record in this subject and you will be well prepared for the challenge of A level study. Do not be fooled by those who suggest film studies involves ‘just watching films all of the time’! This is not a good reason to take this subject. The written exams are as tough as the more traditional subjects like literature or history.

A GCSE in Media or Film studies would certainly be an advantage, but these qualifications are not essential for success. We do recommend that you have at least a grade 5 in English Language and Literature if you are serious about meeting the written requirements of the course.

The BFI (British Film Institute) and Universities like Oxford and Cambridge have all gone on record in support of Film Studies as a subject. The intellectual level expected of our students is commonly appreciated by universities of all levels. In the past students have gone on to study Media, Film, Business, Communication Studies and Journalism at degree level, though the choices available to you will be even broader than this

Taking Film Studies does not mean that you have to then seek out a career as a director or producer. Film studies may sound like a specialist option but the variety of options available to you after you complete your studies remains broad. We are proud of our past students who have gone on to take up roles in the British media industry. These roles include camera operators, directors, radio editors, ‘runners1 and acting.
