Level 3 - 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or higher including English and Mathematics.

Transition - 5 GCSEs at grade 3 or higher. Either English or Mathematics must be at a grade 4.

Course Summary

Why study this subject?

We live in a world where films are used to bring people together for shared experiences, retell historical events and create new worlds. Through film studies, students will gain a deeper understanding of how film works as a medium of representation and as an aesthetic medium.


Course Details

Units that will be studied

The course comprises of three components:

• Component 1: Varieties of film and filmmaking

• Component 2: Global filmmaking perspectives

• Component 3: Production


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment

Component 1- 2hr 30min written examination to assess the knowledge of 6 feature-length films under the headings: Hollywood 1930-1990; American
film since 2005 and British film since 1995 35%

Component 2- 2hr 30min written examination to assess the knowledge and understanding of 5 feature- length films under the headings: Global film; Documentary film; Film movement – Silent cinema; and Film movements – Experimental
film (1960-2000) 35%

Component 3- Production of either a short film (4-5mins) or a screenplay for a short film (1600-1800 words) plus a digitally photographed storyboard of a key section from the screenplay. An
evaluative analysis of 1600-1800 words 30%

Entry requirements

STS Sixth Form offers a broad range of A Level and Applied general qualifications that will prepare you for university or employment. To access this route, you will need to have at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Maths; however, some subjects have specific entry criteria. You will study a programme that can be tailored to meet your interests and future aspirations to give you the best chance of academic success. This programme is a two-year linear course. To study four level 3 courses, you must have at least 5 GCSEs at grade 7 or above. All courses are subject to change and are not set in stone.
