Course Details

Unit 1 and 2 are about physical and human Geography with Unit 3 being a synoptic paper, examining the connections between different aspects of the course. Unit 4 is a write up of independently gathered data, seeking to answer key questions, allowing you to respond to a hypothesis, determined by you.

In Year 12, Tectonic hazards and Coasts [physical units] are studied with Globalisation and Regenerating Places studied on the human side of the specification.

In Year 13, Water [Cycle and water insecurity] and Carbon [Cycle and energy security] makes up the remaining part of the physical course with Superpowers and Health, Human rights and Intervention for the human side.

The third exam, the synoptic paper, will be based on one previously studied unit

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Three exams, each 2 hours 15 minutes long. Paper 1 and 2 are worth 30% of the course each. Paper 3 is worth 20%. Finally, one ‘non-examined assessment, which is internally marked and externally verified. It is worth 20% of the final exam.

Your next steps...

Geography is an increasingly subject and a great choice to develop skills in to pursue a career. None of the changes and challenges facing the UK and the world in the 21st century, including climate change, energy security, migration, urbanisation and globalisation, can be properly understood, let alone tackled, without geography. Whether your future career lies in the environmental sector, business, education, the natural or social sciences, the media, in geospatial industries or in travel, geography opens up a range of choices for your future work and career.
