Course Summary
‘Geography is one of the most exciting, adventurous and valuable subjects to study today. So many of the world’s current problems boil down to geography, and need the geographers of the future to help us understand them.’ (Michael Palin, RGS). Geography A Level provides an awareness of the constantly changing world. Geography surrounds us on a daily basis and is the centre of what is happening in our world. The study of geography at A level builds on the skills established during GCSE Geography. It enables students to engage critically with real world issues and places, applying geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to make sense of the world around them. An A Level in geography is recognised for its academic ‘robustness’ and, most importantly, it also helps young people into the world of work.
Course Details
Students will study the topics of Physical Geography (this examines natural systems and cycles within the physical world including the development of hazards) and topics of Human Geography (which examines the global systems and urban environments of the modern world) The course also includes a coursework element, in which students investigate an aspect of geography that is of interest including data collected in the field. The student produces a full investigation of the chosen question/issue.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
This course is assessed through 80% examination. There are two equally weighted examination papers at the end of the second year. The non-examined assessment (coursework element) is marked by the teacher and is worth 20% of the final grade.
Entry requirements
In addition to the general requirements for access onto A level courses students would be expected to achieve a grade 6 in GCSE Geography.
Your next steps...
An A Level geography graduate will demonstrate a plethora of skills and an awareness of global issues which are transferable to different roles and careers in the world of work. You will find geographers working in a wide range of jobs, from the city to planning, working in the environment to travel and tourism, or in international charities or retail. A geography qualification can also lead to a degree which will be the first building block in more specialist areas such as geology, cartography and environmental studies. Town planning and careers in development as well as hazard management are also popular.
