History A Level [Y1]

History A-Level will help you gain an insight into how today�s world has been shaped by the past. You will study a number of topics, including the revolutions of England and France, focussing on rebellion, republic and restoration. We'll also help you develop strong academic skills in writing and analysis.

Over the next two years, you will explore a range of historical topics that will increase your knowledge and help you develop a range of highly transferable skills. You will become adept at asking insightful questions and thoughtfully examining research and evidence before drawing a conclusion. You will study the revolutions of England (17th century) and France (18th century), both of which involved the execution of their monarch. You will compare how one gave rise to parliamentary democracy, while the other was the dawning of the modern age. In the second year, you will explore one of two subjects. You can choose to explore the witch craze that took hold in the late 16th century, explore the changing attitudes to magic and sorcery, the social, economic, political and dimensions of the phenomenon, and the intellectual changes of what is often called the Age of Reason. Or you can study the developments that have shaped contemporary America and remain a fundamental issue in US society - the changing pattern of race relations between black and white Americans. You will explore civil rights and broader social and cultural changes over a period that began with millions of black Americans in slavery and ended with Barack Obama as President.

You will be assessed by a mixture of end of year exams and coursework units.

Our general entry criteria to study 3 A-Levels is: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 5. For a mixed Level 3 programme the criteria are: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 4. Subject specific entry criteria apply: A GCSE grade 5 in English Language.

Once you have finished this course, you will have opened a wide range of doors for future study at university. You could choose to study degree subjects, such as English, archaeology, media, journalism or in the classics. After your studies, you could pursue a number of careers, such as becoming an archaeologist, a historical researcher, a teacher, a museum curator, or a lawyer.
