Course Summary
Biology is the study of life. Biologists attempt to understand the living world at all levels using many different approaches and techniques. At one end of the scale is the cell, its molecular construction and complex metabolic reactions. At the other end of the scale biologists investigate the interactions that make whole ecosystems functions.
An interest in life is natural for humans; not only are we living organisms ourselves, but we depend on many species for our survival, are threatened by some and co-exist with many more.
Course Details
The IB Biology course provides a comprehensive exploration of life, from the microscopic to global ecosystems, with additional depth for Higher Level students.
Core Content
All students will study these fundamental areas of Biology:
-Cell Biology: Understanding the structure and function of cells, the basic units of life.
-Molecular Biology: Delving into the molecules of life, such as proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids.
-Genetics: Exploring inheritance, genes, and genetic variation.
-Ecology: Investigating the interactions between organisms and their environment.
-Evolution and Biodiversity: Understanding the mechanisms of evolution and the diversity of life on Earth.
-Human Physiology: Examining the systems and functions of the human body.
Additional Content Include:
-Nucleic Acids: A more detailed study of DNA and RNA.
-Metabolism, Cell Respiration and Photosynthesis: Advanced understanding of energy transformations in living organisms.
-Plant Biology: In-depth exploration of plant structure, function, and processes.
-Genetics and Evolution: Further advanced concepts in heredity and evolutionary biology.
-Animal Physiology: A more detailed look at the physiological systems of animals.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
External Assessment [80%]
Paper 1: Multiple Choice Questions
Paper 2: Written responses for SL & HL core
