Course Summary

Have you questioned our legal systems? Curious about how justice is delivered in England? Wondered why or how a judgement was decided upon? Found yourself angry at the ruling of controversial and high-profile cases?

Covering key areas of the English legal system - including criminal law, tort law, and human rights law - the course challenges you to dissect real-life legal cases, construct logical arguments, and debate the moral and ethical dimensions of justice. You will develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and structured debate skills.

Course Details

The AQA A-Level Law course content is split across three main exam papers, covering four major subject areas: The Nature of Law and the English Legal System; Criminal Law; Tort Law; and Human Rights Law. We will consider the court system, how Parliament create laws, the range of different offences tried under Criminal Law and the types of punishment used. In addition, we will explore aspects of negligence, property damage, physical injury and how our freedoms as citizens are protected by the Human Rights Act and its influence on our laws.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

As a linear course, exams are sat at the end of Year 13. The assessment is split into three core papers. Each paper is 2 hours long and worth 33% of the overall grade. The exams consist of a combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.

Entry requirements

In addition to the general requirements for access onto A Level courses, students would be expected to achieve at least a grade 5 in English Literature and Language.
