Course Summary
A Level Mathematics is one of the most popular A Level subject with 97,627 students studying it in 2018. The entry requirement is a Grade 7 at GCSE Mathematics. It is an interesting and challenging course which extends the methods you learned at GCSE and includes applications of mathematics, such as Statistics and Mechanics as well as pure mathematics.

Course Details
A level Mathematics is the most popular A level subject. It involves studying:
• pure maths – use of algebra, graphical techniques and new material such as calculus
• statistics - including analysis of data, interpretation of graphs such as scatter diagrams, and new topics including the Normal distribution and hypothesis testing
• mechanics– studying the motion of objects by considering forces, using ‘suvat’ equations and interpreting graphs representing motion
How will it be delivered and assessed?
There is no coursework element. The qualification is assessed at the end of Year 13 through three papers:
Pure 1 Examination:
• 2 hours
• 33.3% of the qualification
• 100 marks
• Calculator allowed
Pure 2 Examination:
• 2 hours
• 33.3% of the qualification
• 100 marks
• Calculator allowed
Applied (Statistics and Mechanics) Examination:
• 2 hours
• 33.3% of the qualification
• 100 marks
• Calculator allowed
