Course Summary
The motor vehicle industry keeps everybody moving. Specialist skills are needed by private individuals and industries such as public transport, main dealers, retail delivery, breakdown recovery, emergency services and motorsports.
Completed your Level 2 in Motor Vehicle? Or have prior experience in the industry?
This Level 3 Diploma covers all of the light vehicle service aspects, focusing on efficient diagnosis of key components to industry standards. Students will discover the functions of complex systems within today’s vehicles and how these systems integrate with each other to operate to the manufacturer’s specification.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Study programmes include a minimum 180 hour compulsory work experience achieved through one day a week or block placements. The amount of hours required is dependent on the study programme.

INDUSTRY WORK PLACEMENT
All students aged 16-18 on our Level 2 & Level 3 programmes will now have to take part in an exciting and compulsory 180 hours of industry placement programme alongside completion of their vocational course. The programme will give you the chance to gain valuable skills in a real working environment whilst being paired with your ideal employer.
Our mission is to pair students with their ideal employer and to support them continuously during the placement.
There is flexibility on how students complete the placement; it can be during non-college weekdays, weekends, in blocks or over the holiday period. You will receive all of the necessary information during your interview, and if you have any queries in the meantime please contact workexperience@plumpton.ac.uk

- Knowledge of Isolating & Re-energising HV systems in Electric Vehicles
- Diagnosing and Rectification of Light Vehicle Engine Faults
- Diagnosing and Rectification of Light Vehicle Chassis System Faults
- Diagnosing and Rectification of Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline faults
- Diagnosing and Rectification of Light Vehicle Auxiliary Electrical Faults
Entry requirements
- Successful completion of a Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles Level 2 Diploma or equivalent.
- English and Maths GCSE grade 9-4 (previous grade structure A*-C).
- Mature students without the above requirements will be considered.
Your next steps...
By completing this course, you'll be able to go on to complete a Level 3 Land-Based Technology course or go on to take an apprenticeship.
