Course Summary

Engineering is a broad discipline and covers a range of industry sectors such as manufacturing, maintenance, civil engineering, aeronautical etc, and within that covers a multitude of professions and specialisms such as welders, fabricators, electrical and mechanical engineers, product designers etc This level 3 course is designed to help students to progress to either univeristy, secure a higher level apprenticeship or gain immediate employment in an engineering discipline. Students initially enrol onto a 1 year Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering in their first year, and with good grades they can then progress onto the National Extended Diploma in Engineering for their 2nd year. Students require strong mathematical skills to be successful on this course and students will need to have at least a grade 5 at GCSE to secure a place. The course is designed to support students to develop theoretical knowledge, academic & analytical skills and focuses on design-led problem solving solutions to key engineering problems. As a general guide, students are likely to complete the following units over the 2 year course: Engineering Principles Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team Engineering Product Design and Manufacture Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering Electronic Devices and Circuits 6 Electronic Printed Circuit Board Design and Manufacture Computer Aided Design in Engineering Microcontroller Systems for Engineers A Specialist Engineering Project Calculus to Solve Engineering Problem Further Engineering Mathematics Maintenance of Mechanical Systems Static Mechanical Principles in Practice Programmable Logic Controllers

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English and maths at grade C/4 or above.
