Course Summary
The National AAQ in Applied Science enables pupils to study the principles and applications of biology, chemistry and physics, as well as practical scientific procedures and techniques.
Pupils will have the opportunity to develop their investigation skills and explore contemporary issues in science. This will include study of laboratory techniques, including health and safety assessment and associated professional practice.
Course Details
Year 12
• Unit 1: Principles and applications of biology explores the key components of biological science. It will examine cells and tissues, their varied structures and functions and the biological components that interact with their existence.
• Unit 2: Principles and applications of chemistry explores some of the fundamental concepts which underpin the chemistry and chemical reactions of the world around them.
• Unit 3: Principles and applications of physics explores the use of practical and mathematical skills in the study of waves, motion and electricity.
Year 13
• Unit 4: The practical scientific procedures and techniques unit is where you will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, including chromatography, colorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the scientific laboratory environments.
• In the optional unit, which will be decided by science staff based on the interests of the cohort, you will either look at Unit 5, focusing on the scientific investigation skills that are needed to undertake a scientific project or in Unit 6 explore contemporary science issues and their impact on the world we live in. It will develop you with skills of analysis and interpretation across a broad range of scientific issues while exploring how they are reported in the media and in publications.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The course comprises four mandatory units (Units 1-4) and one optional unit (Unit 5 or 6). Of the four mandatory units, three are externally assessed. The remaining mandatory unit and the optional unit are internally assessed.
Entry requirements
Two Grade 4s from GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Combined Science
