Please add three Level 3 courses to your application. These can be a combination of A-Levels, BTEC AAQs or BTEC Extended Certificates. Core Maths must be an additional fourth subject.


Course Summary

The Uniformed Protective Services sector is diverse and encompasses uniformed public services such as the police service, the fire and rescue service, the armed services and the prison service. These public services are organised and financed by the government to benefit society. There is a wide range of occupations for graduate entry across the uniformed protective services, including roles in the police service and the armed services. The course will allow learners to develop their skills and knowledge in discipline and teamwork alongside communication - areas that have been identified as essential in the sector.

Course Details

Year 12

• Unit 2 - Behaviour and Discipline in the Uniformed Protective Services

In this unit, pupils will examine a range of theories that underpin behaviour and how they are applied in the uniformed protective services. Pupils will explore how authority is used to benefit both the individual and society, based on key types of authority in the public sector, making connections between theory and practice

• Unit 13 - Introduction to Criminology

Criminology is the study of crime and criminal behaviour, drawing on psychology, sociology, law and other disciplines, to explain the causes and prevention of crime. There are many different approaches to defining and explaining the extent of crime in England and Wales. In this unit, pupils will study the theories of the causes of criminal behaviour and any other contributory factors that may lead to criminality and antisocial behaviour. Pupils will also explore the various methods of crime prevention in England and Wales

Year 13

• Unit 5 - Teamwork, Leadership and Communication in the Uniformed Protective Services

In this unit, pupils will learn about leadership, investigating the different styles of leadership and how they are best used in the uniformed protective services. Pupils will learn how to be an effective team member while developing leadership skills and will have the opportunity to apply these skills in different situations

• Unit 15 - Police Powers and the Law

In this unit, pupils will develop an understanding of the criminal justice system. Pupils will look at the criminal trial process and examine the procedures that must be followed before the trial and during the trial itself.


How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course involves written exams in Units 2 and 5, in the January of each year. Assignments for Unit 13 and 15 take the form of written coursework, individual/group presentations

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in GCSE English.

Your next steps...

On successful completion of a BTEC Extended Certificate, worth the equivalent of one A-Level, pupils can progress to employment in the Police service or continue their studies at University.
