Please add three Level 3 courses to your application. These can be a combination of A-Levels, BTEC AAQs or BTEC Extended Certificates. Core Maths must be an additional fourth subject.


Course Summary

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport allows pupils to complete both theory and practical units. This involves learning about the body and its functionality alongside fitness training programmes. The various careers that are available in the sport sector are interweaved throughout the course, with particular focus on this in the Professional Development unit. Pupils also have the opportunity to critique and learn from their peers within the Practical Sports Performance unit.

Course Details

Year 12

• Unit 1 - Anatomy and Physiology

Learners will explore the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and also to learn the fundamentals of the energy systems. This unit will give learners the detailed core knowledge required to progress to coaching and instruction in the sports industry or further study.


• Unit 2 – Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and wellbeing

To work in the health and fitness industry, staff need to know how to assess clients and then be able to plan appropriate training programmes to consider individual needs. In this unit, learners will explore the process required for screening clients and assessing their lifestyle and nutritional intake. Pupils can then suggest modifications to help improve the individual’s fitness, health and overall wellbeing.


Year 13

• Unit 3 – Professional Development in the Sports Industry

Learners will have the opportunity to research the different possible careers and the associated job roles in the

sports industry.

• Unit 7 – Practical Sports Performance:

This unit gives learners the opportunity to improve their own knowledge and practical ability in a selection of individual and team sports. They will develop their own practical performance in selected sports, focusing on the application of skills, techniques and tactics and reflecting on their performance.


How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course involves written exams in Units 1 and 2. Assignments for Unit 3 and 7 take the form of written coursework, individual/group presentations and poster and leaflet designs.

Entry requirements

Level 2 Pass in BTEC Sport or Grade 4 in GCSE English.

WHERE NEXT?

On successful completion of a BTEC Extended Certificate, worth the equivalent of one A-Level, pupils can progress to employment or continue their studies at University.
