Course Summary
This course is directed at students who wish to take their study of biology to the next level. The students who take this course will achieve a better understanding of the biological processes involved in different situations within science.
A Level in Biology qualification uses a context-based approach to enable students to develop their conceptual knowledge of essential biological topics in a variety of interesting and relevant settings. It also helps students to develop relevant practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills as integrated aspects of their learning.

The topics covered in Biology are:
1 - Biological Molecules
2 - Cells
3 - Organisms exchange substances with their environment
4 - Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
5 - Energy Transfers Between Organisms
6 - Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments
7 - Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
8 - The control of Gene Expression
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Biology is assessed through three examination papers, Paper 1 and 2 are worth 35% and Paper 3 30% of the final grade. Assessment of practical skills is a compulsory element of Biology, practical skills will be assessed through both examination papers and observed practical activities.
Paper 1 - Topics 1-4 (2hr)
Paper 2 - Topics 5-8 (2hr)
Paper 3 - Topics 1-8 (2hr)
Entry requirements
In order to attend Meopham Sixth Form the minimum entry requirement is 5 level 4 GCSEs, including English Language and Mathematics.
To study Biology you are required to achieve level 5 or above in English Language and Mathematics and a 66 or above in combined science qualifications or a 6 in Biology and level 5 in Physics or Chemistry in single science qualifications.

A Level Biology is an excellent base for a university degree in healthcare, such as medicine, veterinary or dentistry, as well as the biological sciences, such as biochemistry, molecular biology or forensic science.
