Course Details

During this one-year course you will develop your existing knowledge and learn more advanced techniques and principles of bricklaying. You will start to become familiar with working and technical drawings of building plans, build solid walling and experiment with cavity and solid wall construction. Learning will take place in our purpose built workshop, and you will have the opportunity to improve your English, maths and employability skills. You will also undertake a work experience placement to extend your learning. Units you will cover during the year include: * Health and Safety * Principles of building construction * Interpreting working drawings * Setting-out buildings * Building solid walling * Cavity and solid wall construction Several recent surveys by organisations like the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) show that the current shortage of skilled tradespeople in the construction industry means that good bricklayers will be in greater demand than ever in coming years.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessments will take place throughout the duration of the course. Practical tasks will make up 60% of the assessment, 30% will be coursework and 10% will be made up of exams. Constructive feedback from your tutor will help you to improve and progress towards recognised industrial standards.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of the Level 1 course and GCSE English or maths at grade 3.

Your next steps...

On completion of the course you could progress onto a higher level of study or start an Apprenticeship in Bricklaying. With some additional training you may also look to start your career in the industry and move into roles such as a Bricklayer, Site manager and a Property developer, or become self-employed.
