Course Summary

Many of the skills developed through studying English Literature are related to independent thinking: the ability to analyse sophisticated ideas and the ways in which they are presented, to synthesise large and complex text, and to know how to build a convincing argument. The course is split between the study of the Tragedy genre (40%), Crime texts (40%) and two essays for coursework (20%). Students explore complementary critical theories such a Marxism and feminism and they are encouraged to read widely to gain a good knowledge of the literary canon.
