Course Summary

Core Maths is a Level 3 qualification which is the equivalent in size, and carries the same weight in UCAS points, as an AS-Level. It focuses on practical and real-world applications of mathematics – you will no longer be asking the question ‘when will I ever need to use this?’ Throughout the course you will cover a range of topics, including statistics, probability, financial mathematics, and algebra. This diversity can help you explore different areas of mathematics and discover your strengths and interests. Studying Core Maths can enhance your problem-solving abilities as it teaches you to analyse and solve real-life problems using mathematical techniques, which is a valuable skill in various professions.

Course Details

This course builds on GCSE Mathematics, taking the fundamental skills developed and applying them to real life situations. Problems explored range from; analysing statements made in the media and election results, to modelling an estimate for the cost of resurfacing the UK’s motorway network.

• Paper 1
• Data analysis, personal finance, modelling and estimation.

• Paper 2
Critical analysis, the normal distribution, confidence intervals, correlation and regression
Elements of Paper 1 will also be required to address problem in Paper 2. The course will focus on problem solving and developing skills needed in real life and for further study.

Grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths and is an taken as an additional fourth subject.
