Course Summary

Media Studies is designed to develop your analytical skills through the analysis of film, TV, advertising, online and print media. It is the study of individual media texts, how and why they were made, who they were made for, and the rules that govern their production. A-level Media Studies engages students in the detailed study of media products in relation to the four areas of the theoretical framework: Media language; media representation; media industries; media audiences.

Course Details

Students are required to study media products from all of the following media forms:

  • Audio-visual forms (TV, film, radio, advertising , video games and music video)
  • Online forms (social and participatory media, video games, music video, newspapers, magazines, advertising and marketing)
  • Print forms (newspapers, magazines, advertising and marketing)

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Media is assessed through two examination papers and a non-examination assessment piece of coursework. Each examination is worth 35% with the non-examination assessment worth 30% of the final grade.

Media One:

  • Section A will focus on Media Language and Media Representations.
  • Section B will focus on Media Industries and Media Audiences.

Media Two: Questions will focus on the in-depth media forms of television, magazines and online, social and participatory media/video games.

Non-exam assessment: Creating a cross-media production

Entry requirements

In order to attend Meopham Sixth Form the minimum entry requirement is 5 level 4 GCSEs, including English Language and Mathematics.

To study Media you are required to achieve the minimum of a level 5 in GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature.
