Course Summary

A-Level Biology allows students to explore the diverse world of Biological Science from the solid foundation built at GCSE. From the traditional cornerstones of biological molecules, classification and the function of essential body systems through to the ever-changing world of genetics and ecosystem interaction, the course is diverse and challenging. Throughout there is ample opportunity for students to work practically and develop essential and transferable skills such individual/group investigation and analysis and conclusion from data, which will support the development of their theoretical knowledge. This course favours those who have a genuine interest in the living world around and within and the desire to know more.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Paper 1: Advanced Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics (30%)

Paper 2: Advanced Physiology, Evolution and Ecology (30%)

Paper 3: General and Practical Principles in Biology Science Practical Endorsement (40%)


Entry requirements

Grade 9-4 in at least 5 GCSEs including English, Maths and a 6-6 in Combined Science or Grade 9-5 in separate GCSE Biology and either separate GCSE Chemistry or separate GCSE Physics.

This is a course which favours students with an interest in continuing to enhance their understanding of Biology whilst preparing for either further study or entry to the world of work. Careers in the Biology field include a Microbiologist, Ecologist, Laboratory Technician and working for the NHS.
