Course Summary
Sociology is the ‘study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society’. Over the two-year course, students will engage with a range of sociological topics and debate contemporary issues which allow them to analyse how society works. Throughout the course, students will also get the opportunity to apply sociological concepts and theory independently to their own research project. This allows them to immerse themselves as a sociologist and relate their knowledge and experiences to current Government social policy.
The challenging two-year course aims to prepare students for success in the world of work or university by equipping them with communication, written and evaluative skills.
Students are introduced to key sociological concepts and theories including: Functionalism, Marxism, Feminism, Interactionism and Postmodernism. This provides our students with a secure base to begin exploring key topic areas including: Education, Families and Households, Crime and Deviance and Beliefs in Society. Students are encouraged to explore and evaluate traditional and contemporary research as well as analyse the impact of current social policy.
