Course Outline:
Component 1: Personal Investigation (120 marks - 60% of A Level)
To produce a successful personal investigation, students must demonstrate a wide range of skills. Initially, the course is teacher-led, introducing students to a variety of artists, materials and techniques during lessons and practical workshops. Students are required to complete an extended written element of at least 1000 words, connecting their practical and theoretical work using specialist terminology. As the course progresses, students are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning, ultimately defining a personal project that reflects their artistic interests and leads to original, independent outcomes.
Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (80 marks – 40% of A Level)
The Externally Set Assignment requires students to respond to a stimulus provided by Eduqas. This component takes place from February of Year 13 until the end of the course, representing the culmination of A Level study. Students select one starting point from the provided options and then embark on a preparatory period that involves research and experimentation. After this preparation, they create an outcome during fifteen hours of sustained focus study. The component allows students to bring together the best of their knowledge, understanding and skills acquired throughout the course, showcasing their ability to interpret the chosen theme.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Teaching, Learning and Assessment:
Students are guided through the sociohistorical context of art, exploring how key practitioners and cultural influences have shaped the techniques and ideas they use in their own work. Their creative process is recorded in sketchbooks and portfolios. Each component is assessed against four key objectives: AO1 to develop ideas through investigations and critical understanding of artists and contexts; AO2 to refine work by exploring ideas and experimenting with media, materials and techniques; AO3 to record ideas and document insights; and AO4 to present a personal and meaningful outcome that realises their creative intentions.
