Minimum Entry Requirements
The admissions criteria for the Sixth Form are as follows:
At least a grade 4 in English Language or English Literature and a grade 4 in Mathematics
Meet the entry requirements for at least 3 full A Level / vocational subjects. Each subject has its own specific entry criteria. These can be found on the individual subject pages.
Additional considerations
A positive attitude in your chosen subjects and a respect for school aims, objectives and ethos
Commitment to the expectations of the Sixth Form and the school community
Students will not be admitted if they have not completed the appropriate paperwork
Course Summary
We are delighted to offer the Classical Civilisation A Level which encompasses a wide range of topics including art, philosophy, Greek theatre, Greek religion and both Greek and Roman epic. All texts will be studied in English. Through these texts, students will explore the historical, social and political contexts of ancient society There is no course work, and you do not need to know the Latin or Greek languages.
Course Details
• World of the Hero: 2 hour 30-minute paper - Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid
• Culture and the Arts: 1 hour 45-minute paper - Ancient Greek Theatre including a study of Sophocles’ Oedipus; Euripides’ Bacchae and Aristophanes’ Frogs
• Beliefs and Ideas: 1 hour 45 minutes paper - Ancient Greek Religion
How will it be delivered and assessed?
There will be three examinations at the end of the two-year course, including the analysis of primary sources and essay style questions. Students will be expected to commit to background reading, independent research and note taking. Discussing the texts read, annotating the sources and contributing ideas to interpretations are all key skills developed and supported throughout the course.

Preferred: Students should have a grade 6 or above at GCSE in either English Literature or History.
Minimum: Students should have at least a grade 5 at GCSE in English Language, English Literature or History

The broad nature of Classical Civilisation allows the students to follow a wide variety of career paths, with many students going on to work in law, journalism and government. The topics encourage historical enquiry, analytical skills, effective communication and critical thinking. The course is held in high esteem by universities and would complement many other A Level courses including History, English, Philosophy, Religion & Ethics, Modern Languages or Psychology.
