Course Summary

Course Details

Criminology offers students a fascinating insight into the reasons behind criminal behaviour and how society responds to crime. In Year 12, students explore why people commit crimes, how crime is perceived, the different types of crime, and why some crimes go unreported. These topics are studied through real-world case studies, both historical and contemporary, encouraging students to consider the broader impact of crime on individuals, society, and the environment. This is supported by an in-depth look at criminological theories and how they shape crime prevention and criminal justice policies. In Year 13, the focus shifts to the legal process, as students follow criminal cases from the initial crime through to the final verdict. They assess how effective the criminal justice system is in delivering social control, applying their understanding of criminal behaviour, criminological theory, and legal procedures. The course is assessed through a combination of two written exams and two controlled assessments. Exams are 90 minutes long and externally marked, while the controlled assessments are internally set over two days and externally moderated. Grading is awarded from A* to E. Criminology provides 16 to 56 UCAS points and supports progression to university or careers in the criminal justice sector, such as policing, probation, or related fields.
