Course Summary

Course Details

Students have the opportunity to study a broad and diverse range of literary texts, developing a deeper appreciation of literature across time. From Shakespeare’s Othello to modern works such as The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, students explore drama, prose, and poetry while engaging with critical interpretations and examining texts within their historical and social contexts.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course includes the study of key texts such as A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, poetry by Christina Rossetti, and contemporary poems from the Poems of the Decade anthology, featuring writers like Patience Agbabi and Simon Armitage. Assessment is through three written examinations—covering drama, prose, and poetry—making up 80% of the final grade, alongside one coursework essay of approximately 2,500 words, contributing the remaining 20%. Grades are awarded from A* to E with UCAS points ranging from 16 to 56. This qualification supports entry into higher education and a wide range of careers.
