Course Summary

Students will study prose, poetry and drama texts, in addition to extracts of fiction, non-fiction and non-literary material that share common content, theme and/or styles. This can include, but is not limited to: spoken transcriptions; advertisements; autobiographies; biographies; travel writing; journalism; letters; reports; and speeches. Students will also be required to write creatively, including the act of re-creative writing inspired by set texts. An accompanying critical commentary is required, in which students are encouraged to reflect on the language choices they have made, making points of comparison and contrast. Methods of language analysis will build upon those embedded at GCSE, expecting students to be familiar with the following: phonetics, phonology and prosodics; lexis and semantics; grammar; morphology; pragmatics; and discourse. The coursework component is comprised of a personal investigation that explores a specific technique or theme in both literary and non-literary discourse (2,500-3,000 words)
