Course Details

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies has been designed for learners developing the basic skills to become a hairdresser.

During this qualification you will develop both skills and knowledge in health and safety for both yourself, your peers and your clients.

You will learn how to conduct a thorough consultation prior to starting a service and understand how the choice of shampoos and conditioners can affect the hair and scalp. You will be able to cut basic haircuts and dress clients hair, in addition to knowing about various colouring and lightening products and techniques.

From the optional section of this qualification, there are ten units to choose from.

These can include but are not limited to:

  • Perming hair
  • Scalp massage
  • Creating a total look
  • Promoting services and products to your clients.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment will be conducted through hands-on evaluations in our salons, complemented by written assignments and online examinations.

Your next steps...

After you complete the course, you can do a Level 3 qualification which will deepen your technical expertise and covers advanced cutting, colouring, and styling techniques.

It also enhances your understanding of salon management and client consultation, preparing you for senior stylist roles or self-employment.

If you're interested in diversifying your skills, you might consider a qualification in Barbering and focus on men's grooming, shaving, and clipper work.

Many salons also offer apprenticeships that combine on-the-job training with further study. This route allows you to earn whilst gaining valuable real-world experience.

With a Level 2 qualification, you can also start working in a salon to build hands-on experience. This practical exposure is invaluable and can inform your decision on further specialisations.

You could also start work in related areas such as:

  • Hair and Makeup for Film/TV
  • Wig Making and Styling
  • Fashion Styling
  • Trichology – the study of hair and scalp health.
