Course Summary

You will have the chance to pursue personal interests whilst developing your ability to record, research, design and make. You will create work across a number of discipline areas including painting and drawing, photography, graphic design, sculpture, mixed media and ceramics. In addition, this course gives you the opportunity to develop your personal expression, imagination, sensitivity, conceptual thinking, powers of observation and analytical ability.


Course Details

Students will undertake practical coursework projects involving recording observations and experiences, analysing sources, developing ideas, researching artists/designers and the production of final pieces in either 2 or 3 dimensions.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Paper 1: Component 1. Personal Investigation: The practical work will comprise a portfolio of artwork on themes and ideas developed from personal starting points. The personal study will be evidenced through critical written communication showing contextual research and understanding in a minimum 1000 words of continuous prose. How is it assessed: 60% of A Level

Paper 2: Component 2. Externally Set Assignment: This component allows students opportunities to generate and develop ideas, research primary and contextual sources, record practical and written observations, experiment with media and processes, and refine ideas towards producing personal resolved outcome(s). How is it assessed:

  • 15-hour period of sustained focus under examination conditions which will take place over multiple sessions
  • The Externally Set Assignment is released on 1 February and contains 8 themes and suggested starting points.
  • 40% of A Level

Your next steps...

Prospects for progression into H.E. or Future Careers following 'A' Level. Many students go on to Art and Design College. A large number of students also go on to University for a wide range of degree courses.
