Course Summary

Course Details

Students will have the opportunity to explore both British and international history, developing key skills in critical thinking, evidence analysis, and constructing well-supported arguments. The course balances breadth and depth through the study of different periods, themes, and historical interpretations, while also allowing students to pursue independent research. Students will study four components.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Unit 1 focuses on Anglo-Saxon and Norman England (1035–1107), developing enquiry skills through a written exam worth 25% of the final grade. Unit 2 covers Russia (1894–1941) and is assessed through a one-hour exam worth 15%. Unit 3 offers a thematic and interpretative study of Civil Rights in the USA (1865–1992), assessed by a 2 hour 30-minute exam worth 40%. Finally, Unit 4 is a coursework component—an independent historical investigation on a topic of the student’s choice—worth 20%.

Entry requirements

Grade 9-5 in five GCSEs including Mathematics and a minimum Grade 6 in History, English Language and English Literature.
