Course Summary

The course aims to give students a broad understanding of Photography. It will provide opportunities to develop personal expression, imagination, sensitivity, conceptual thinking, powers of observation and analytical abilities, whilst developing technical skills.

Course Details

The course is intended for students who wish to pursue and develop their studies of Photography. Students will have the opportunity to produce work in a number of photographic areas, such as portraiture, landscape, documentary and experimental imagery. Students are introduced to a range of digital photographic and editing techniques and will undertake practical coursework projects involving recording observations & experiences, analysing sources, developing ideas, researching photographers/artists and the production of final images.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Paper 1: Component 1. Personal Investigation

This is a practical photographic investigation conducted through a series of linked projects supported by written material. The investigation must show clear development from initial intentions to the final outcomes. It must include evidence of the student’s ability to research and develop ideas and relate their work in meaningful ways to relevant critical/contextual materials.

How is it assessed: 60% of A-Level. Preparatory period + 15 hours supervised time.

The question paper will consist of a choice of eight questions to be used as starting points. Students are required to select one of the questions from which to develop a practical photographic project supported by written material. How is it assessed: 15–hour period of sustained focus under examination conditions which will take place over multiple sessions.

The Externally Set Assignment is released in February and students work on their chosen question/project until May: 40% of A-Level
