Sociology is a social science. Sociologists investigate the social world using a variety of research methods to find evidence to explain human social behaviour, what influences this, particularly whether society exerts a major influence on the way people behave or whether the actions of individuals actually influence the way society is o rganised and functions. Some major themes that interest sociologists include social change and social inequality. Sociological findings and theories based on evidence from research are often used to influence social policy.

The course aims to encourage students to:
- gain a deeper understanding of the world around them and reflect on social issues that are often relevant to their own social experiences.
- acquire knowledge and a critical understanding of contemporary social processes and social changes.
- develop a broad set of desirable key skills, including the ability to analyse and formulate clear, logical arguments with scope for extensive evaluation from a range of theoretical perspectives.
- develop strong critical thinking skills and be able to consider issues with a global outlook.

A Level Course Candidates must complete t he following three components to gain the full A Level qualification:

Component 1- Sociali sation, Culture and Identity (SCI) - Written Paper (1 hour 30 minutes)
Section A Introducing Socialisation, Culture and Identity - 3 compulsory questions - 1 based on source material
Section B Families and Relationships - 3 compulsory questions

Component 2 - Res earching and Und erstandin g Social Inequality (RUSI) - Written Paper (2 hours 15 minutes)
Section A Research Methods and Researching Social Inequalities - 4 compulsory questions (based on source material)
Section B Understanding Social Inequalities - 2 compulsory questions

Component 3 - Contemporary Debates in Society Written Paper (2 ho urs 15 minutes)
Section A Globalisation and the Digital Social World - 3 compulsory questions - 2 based on source material
Section B Education - 3 compulsory questions

Students should have achieved at least 5 GCSEs 5-9 including a Grade 5 in English
