Course Summary

Do you want to work with children in the sports and leisure sector? This could be the perfect course for you. During the course, you will develop the knowledge, practical skills and professional behaviours needed to work with children in sport and physical activity settings.

This qualification maps to the CIMSPA professional standards for Working in the School Environment and will provide direct entry into the workplace as a sports and activity leader.

This course is suitable for students who have achieved a 4/C grade in English and Maths.

Course Details

Throughout the course, you will develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to work as a children’s sports activity leader.

You will learn:

  • How people participate in sport and physical activity
  • About job roles and career pathways within the sport and active leisure industry
  • The personal skills and professional behaviours expected in the workplace
  • How schools operate and how the National Curriculum links to children’s sport
  • The role and responsibilities of a children’s sports leader within an organisation
  • How to plan, deliver and review children’s sports activity sessions
  • Key legislation, safeguarding procedures, health and safety requirements, and industry guidance

Alongside your studies, you’ll complete a tailored work experience placement with a leading industry specialist. Our dedicated Industry Liaison Officers will match you with a placement that supports your interests and career goals, with many students going on to secure paid work as a result.

You will also develop transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, self-management, literacy and numeracy, which will support your future studies and employment.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

This course is assessed through internal assessment, designed to reflect real workplace situations.

You will be assessed through:

  • Practical activities and demonstrations
  • Written and practical assignments
  • Ongoing assessment of your professional skills and behaviours

There are no external exams. To achieve the qualification, you must successfully complete all units.

Towards the end of the course, you will complete a synoptic assessment, where you will take on the role of a sports leader. You will demonstrate your ability to plan and lead activities, work safely, set up and take down equipment, and work effectively as part of a team.

By the end of the course, you will have developed a strong foundation in Sports Coaching, especially for young people. This course gives you a strong foundation to build a professional career in sport and physical activity.

You can finish with a Level 2 qualification and get a skilled job however, this programme is designed to help you move toward a Level 3 qualification, which can lead to advanced jobs or apprenticeships.
