Course Summary

  • Health and Safety at Work: Understanding how to work safely in workshops and on site, using protective equipment and following electrical safety standards.
  • Electrical Principles: Learning the fundamentals of electricity, circuits, voltage, current, and resistance, and how these apply to real-world installations.
  • Installation of Buildings and Structures: Developing practical skills in wiring circuits, installing sockets, switches, lighting, and other electrical systems, and ensuring work meets professional standards.
  • Application of New and Energy-Saving Technology: Exploring modern electrical systems, sustainable energy solutions, and innovations in the electrical trade.

Throughout the course, you will practise these skills in our well-equipped workshops, gaining real-world experience using professional tools and equipment. You will also have the chance to take part in national skills competitions, such as KFE4Skills , allowing you to showcase your abilities, and contribute to community projects, including Ashford College Community Week , applying your skills in real-life settings and building teamwork, problem-solving, and professional communication skills.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment will be through practical observations, written work and online tests.

Entry requirements

This pathway gives you time to develop skills in your chosen area and improve your English and maths to a grade 4 or equivalent. Reaching this level will help you have more opportunities in the future, like getting a skilled job, an apprenticeship, or moving on to a Level 3 course. To join this programme, you'll need the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at grades 2 to 1, including English and maths at Level 1 or higher.
